THE CUMBRES & TOLTEC SCENIC RAILROAD
CHAMA, NM to ANTONITO, CO
ANTONITO, CO to CHAMA, NM
With last year's departure of the Rio Grande Rail Passenger Corporation, the 2006 operating season of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad appeared to be in jeopardy. Without an operator or published schedule, and with uncertain funding from New Mexico and (definitely) from Colorado, and minimal financing of off-season work on essential rolling stock, the near-term future of the Railroad was in disarray.
Fast-forwarding, both the Friend of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Iowa Pacific Holdings Corporation made presentations to the C&TS Commission for the 2006 operation of the Railroad. After listening to both proposals, the Commission opted for the Friends, and on March 13, 2006, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Management Corparation was formed.
The administration of the CTSMC includes Frank Turner (President and CEO), Tim Tennant (Vice President and GM), Richard Tower, Elmer Salazar and Amos Cordova. (More information on these individuals is on the Friends' website, www.cumbrestoltec.org.)
With only a one-year contract, the CTSMC has a lot to do before the 2006 season. Reservations and ticketing, locomotive and passenger car maintenance, track inspection, preparation, and repair, and other tasks must be performed before the first passenger-carrying wheel is turned. And those tasks depend on funding.
According to this link - http://www.cumbrestoltec.org/cgi-bin/news.pl?read=398 - there is only a $100,000 margin between income (funding and revenue) and outgo (expenses).
What can we do? Funding is essential, and the question of how to financially contribute to the CTSMC was posed to Tim Tennant. Mr. Tennant replied that donations earmarked "operations" or "CTSMC" could be sent to the Friends and would be directed for that purpose.
The address for making donations is: Friends of the C&TSRR, 6005 Osuna Road NE, Albuquerque, NM 87109.
